About The Beech Hedge
Please sign in to see more.
During the 18th Century the owners of Hardington House in Lanarkshire began an undertaking which involved the establishment of a new formal garden.Peter Dewar, an ancestor of mine, was a hedger and moved from the Scottish Borders to Lanarkshire to commence his employment at that time. It is possible that the Beech Hedge which formed part of those formal gardens was the responsibility of Peter Dewar but as I was to learn "A Hedger" was much more as the primary purpose of the job was to maintain and preserve the boundaries of the Estate Properties which were usually enclosed by hedges as the field boundaries. One source describes the men from the Borders area who were Hedgers as "highly intelligent and skilled artisans"
